A Survey on Security Aspects of Machine Type Communications in Long Term Evolution Networks

K. Krishna Jyothi and Dr. Shilpa Chaudhari
Abstract

Networking among machine terminals with interaction without human interventions is popularly known as Machine-to-Machine (M2M) application/service or Machine-Type Communications (MTC). Currently, short-range radio technologies operating on an unlicensed spectrum such as Bluetooth, wifi, zigbee are used to implement MTC based applications. The major consideration for successful deployment of next generation MTC to address this challenge involves the ready-to-use cellular infrastructure-based network technologies like Long term Evolution (LTE) and future 5G. The advantages of LTE-MTC include increase battery life, reduce device cost/complexity and enhance coverage. The majority of research in MTC area focus on sensing, congestion control, computing, controlling technologies and resource management. Applications using MTC can’t be launched in the marketplace without security assurance yielding cyber security as paramount importance in MTC. Very few research articles exist in the literature discussing the security aspect of MTC. There are few articles those discuss the group authentication but it lacks considering all security issues. This paper proposes a novel and first of its kind classification for the existing work done considering aspects of security provisioning in MTC with systematic description and comparison.
