Factors Affecting the Rain Attenuation Using Augmented ITU Model

Usha Ayalasomayajula and Karunakar Godi
Abstract

Rain attenuation prediction models suited to local conditions are necessary in order to improve the reliability of satellite-earth communication links and for economically efficient design. The rain attenuation model International Telecommunication Union Radio Communication Sector (ITU-R) was found to be not suitable for tropical region and Moupfouma model predicted lower rain attenuation values. This study proposes an Augmented ITU-R (Aug.ITU) model by combining ITU with constant value of Moupfouma for local condition of India (tropical country). The effect of different factors viz station height, frequency, polarisation, elevation angle and latitude was studied and found that model was able to predict better rain-induced attenuation. In this study, percent error values of Aug.ITU and ITU-R were calculated.
