An Action Plan for Replacement of Ageing Distribution Transformers of Indian Power Utilities

Narasimha Pandit and Dr.R.L. Chakrasali
Abstract

Distribution Transformer (DT) is the heart of a power distribution system. They are large in numbers and most of them are old transformers. Whenever they fail, they are repaired and put into service again. The No load losses and Load losses of repaired DTs are more; and the load on the DT is increasing constantly, causing them to overheat while in service, leading to a premature failure again. If all, or a part of these old Repaired Good DTs (RGDTs) are replaced by Amorphous Metal core DTs (AMDTs), the failure rate as well as the system losses will come down drastically. The extent to which a particular power utility will gain from this exercise is studied in this paper and analysed.
