There is an ever growing increase in the use of mobile devices among the human population. Each day millions of users access social networking sites and create enormous amount of data which are stored in cloud environment. These data are susceptible to various threats and attacks there by posing a serious challenge in securing user’s private social data. In order to provide better security and ensure data privacy it is essential to understand all possible threats that could attack the data and also should have better understanding about the countermeasures in place to avert such attacks. In this paper an overall view about all possible attacks and countermeasures with special focus on encryption methods and Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is presented. The idea is to develop a better encryption and IDS for privacy protection in cloud environment by using the understanding.
