Abstract

Walkability of any area is one of the significant parameter to represents the quality of life of the area. Especially in the recreational pockets where people visit with an intention to relax, rejuvenate and refresh. Walking is one of the major activities in the recreational pockets and walking is an integral part of almost every activity in the surroundings. It is interesting to assess how the surrounding physical environment influences the walking and what may be the urban design interventions to make the pocket more walkable. This paper focuses on just the same, for demonstration purpose four recreational pockets of Vadodara city from Gujarat state of India is considered. TOPSIS method of multi criteria decision making is used for this research and data collection is done using manual method using questionnaire as a tool. The results reveals that the TOPSIS method is not only useful in quantification of walkability and comparing the metropolitan pockets in terms of their LOS for walkability but it also gives that status of individual pocket on how close or far they are from the ideal situation In this study the Sayajibaug (Kamatibaug) pocket from East zone was found more walkable than the other three pockets.
