Demonetization of rupees 500 and rupees 1000 Indian currency notes was a bold decision taken by the Indian government on 8th November 2016. It has influenced almost all the corners of the economy. In this paper, an attempt has been made to find the impact of demonetization on self-help groups and women empowerment. Selfhelp groups are the voluntary association of people including women for saving small amounts known as ‘thrifts’ out of which productive and contingent credit requirement of the members of the group could be met with. Women's empowerment refers to a strategy to accomplish gender equality as well as to the innate capacity building processes. Self-help groups have, indeed, emerged as one of the finest strategies for women empowerment. 2016 demonetization was a sudden action taken by the government and it had impacts on normal working and cash transactions of self-help groups. This study is to know about the negative impacts of demonetization on normal working of self-help groups as well as women empowerment.
