Bullying and its Effect on Psychological Health: Challenges and Prevention

Abstract

Bullying as a construct dates back to the times of ancient scriptures of Mahabharata and Ramayana where episodes of physical bullying have been recorded. The Kauravas bullied the Pandavas. Bhima being physically stronger bullied others. It is one of the most common social menaces in today’s times giving rise to anti-social behaviours among children and adolescents. With time, extended exposure, and everything being a click away, the situation at hand has only worsened. . Stakeholders of education such as, teachers, administrators, counsellors, parents, psychologists, and significant others are constantly complaining about various forms of bullying becoming rampant in the Indian educational setup. Some of the common examples are getting back at peers/ others, lack of acceptance, low altruistic behaviour, causing physical harm, no delay in gratification, name calling, peer victimization, having low self-confidence and low self-esteem, low academic performance, poor coping mechanism, and using the internet to bully others, etc. These pose as great challenges for the psychologists of today to maintain the psychological health of individuals, especially adolescents. Therefore, the need of a wholesome intervention programme using eclectic approaches towards combating bullying is required. The present research paper attempts to reveal the steps which can be taken in order to resolve these issues. Results show that various programmes, techniques, and interventions can be applied to manage bullying and related issues in varied settings.
