Abstract

Image Annotation Is a key element of medical image-based computer aided diagnosis system. Machine learning which is a self-learning process has evolved over the decades and is now a very accurate and reliable system that learns from data, identifies patterns and decides on solutions with minimal human intervention. This paper focusses on the different manual annotation tools and various datasets available and also reviews certain annotation tools used in the segmentation stage of medical images which enables automated detection and diagnosis of diseases. Annotation refers to the process of manually defining regions in an image and then adding metaphors or comments of these particular regions in the form of text. Image annotation enables assignment of metadata to a digital image as a caption or a keyword. These reduce information latent in scans to more unambiguous details enabling making accurate clinical decisions.
