Enhanced Biogas Production from Anaerobic Digestion of Thermal Pretreated Garden Waste and Pretreated Wheat Straw under Mesophilic Condition

Abstract

Garden waste and wheat straw are eminent feed-stokes for biogas generation through anaerobic diges-tion due to their chemical and physical properties and also due to their abundant availability. A comparison between thermal pre-treated garden waste (TPGW) and mechanical pre-treated wheat straw (MPWS) with cow dung is done for enhanced production of biogas and methane under mesophilic conditions. The experiments are performed with two different slurries of TPGW and MPWS. The TPGW slurry constituted 20 grams of calcium hydroxide, 900 ml of water directly taken from taps, 700 grams of garden waste and 200 grams of fresh manure having TS and VS of 28.89% and 92.30%, respectively. The MPWS slurry constituted 20 grams of calcium hydroxide, 900 ml of water directly taken from taps, 150 grams of wheat straw and 750 grams of fresh cow dung having TS and VS of 8.69% and 7.05%, respectively. The results have shown the cumulative biogas production and CH4 yield for MPWS of 57418.49 ml and 33154.47 ml, respectively. Whereas, production of cumulative biogas and methane yield for TPGW of 14496 ml and 4086.67 ml, respectively throughout the experiment is obtained by maintaining the temperature inside a batch reactor at 40 oC. The high value of methane yield (8.11 times in comparison with TPGS) in MPWS manifests its significant po-tential in anaerobic digestion as a promising feedstock.
