Fuzzy PI Controller for RPR Networks

Fahd Alharbi
Abstract

The Resilient Packet Ring (IEEE 802.17) fairness algorithm is simple, but exhibits some weaknesses. The bandwidth allocation severely oscillates when the traffic is unbalanced. Several algorithms have been proposed in recent years to overcome this issue. For example, a proportional integral controller used to solve the congestion issue and achieve fairness. Unfortunately, the ring propagation delay has an impact on the system performance where the bandwidth oscillates and the control system became unstable in the case of large ring delay. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy PI controller to reduce the effect of the delay. Simulation results show that the proposed controller is able to achieve fairness with no oscillations.
