Politics of identity or identity politics and demand for separate statehood are not new to Assam. In Assam, since 1967 Bodo community has been demanding a separate state called ‘Udayachal’ now called ‘Bodoland’. For addressing this demand although the then National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government created Bodoland Autonomous Council (BAC) in 1993 and Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) in 2003 but their prime demand i.e. ‘Bodoland’ as a separate state is yet to be achieved due to various complex problems like majority/minority, Non-Bodo movement and so on. On the one hand Bodo community have been demanding to divide Assam 50-50 outside Assam, on the other hand Non-Bodo communities have been demanding to divide BTAD 70-30 which results into a more complex situation. Hence, in this paper endeavor would be made to look into the reasons of ethnic conflict and the issue of land right between these two communities.
