Abstract

Employee turnover affected companies’ profitability and sustainability. Providing flexible work arrangements (FWA) has been determined as one of the ways to retain capable employees (Millennial). To tackle the slowing growth of workforce, Singapore government has introduced scheme to encourage Singapore businesses to provide FWA on voluntary basis, instead of developing laws to legalize the rights to request for FWA as per some other countries. With many studies being inconclusive of the benefits, this research aims to determine the impact of flexi-time scheme on employee retention of Singapore companies to evaluate its effectiveness as a retention strategy. This research analyses data collected through structured questionnaires from 110 permanent employees working in companies with and without flexi-time offered formally and informally. The findings concluded that flexi-time has impact on employees’ attitude, promotion opportunity and WLB which in turn influence turnover intentions. While employees strongly agreed to the needs of flexi-time, they are divided between the supportiveness of the companies. Thus, apart from having a fair balanced availability to successfully implement FWA relies on alignment to employees’ needs and company culture.
