Maria Cristina Lalaine M. Nerona
Abstract

Solid wastes have become a global problem. Inefficient management of these waste brings out serious implications affecting public health and the environment. In the Philippines, a law called Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 has been in effect but problems still exist. Since environmental issues are everybody’s concern, state universities should be at the forefront in leading the community towards better solid waste management. The study aimed to determine the extent of implementation of the Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 in the City of Ilagan, Philippines. It made use of descriptive survey method with questionnaires as main data gathering instruments. There were 426 respondents which were composed of elected city officials, elected community officials, city health and sanitation officials, school administrators and city household residents. It was found out that the stakeholders are aware of the waste management plan of the city but they encounter problems such as: limited coverage of garbage collection, lack of treatment and disposal facilities for hazardous waste and poor response of residents to waste minimization such as garbage reusing and recycling. It is recommended that an extension program on solid waste management be conducted.
