Good Governance In The Management Of The Secondary School Surau

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the governance in the management of the secondary school surau, which serves as a place of worship for all students and school staff. In particular, the focus of the study is on the efficiency of the financial management of the surau with regard to the sources of funds, the types of religious activities conducted, and the expenditures in carrying out such activities. This qualitative study used library research and field research methods involving eight research subjects selected from several secondary schools throughout Malaysia. Structured interviews were conducted involving teachers who had been appointed as the respective surau committee members with their principal's approval. Research instruments used were based on the interview questions forms pertaining to the management and administration of the school surau and the financial management of the religious activities carried out. Data were analyzed descriptively to highlight the efficiency of the governance of the school surau, ideal surau administrators, financial management, and surau activities that were deemed beneficial to all the stakeholders. The research findings showed that almost all the selected school practiced good governance in managing the school surau financially, logistically, and materially. Specifically, the findings showed that school surau that had good governance were able to carry out religious activities effectively and efficiently, the impact of which helped develop students who were morally upright, courteous, responsible, and religiously observant. Clearly, such findings underscore the imperative of practicing good governance in managing the secondary school surau to ensure all religious activities can be planned and executed with a resounding success. Judging from the novelty aspect, this study is very useful for school surau administrators especially to the high school principal, Senior Assistant Student Affairs, Senior Administrative Assistant, Head of Humanities coordinating surau activities and all teachers involved in the management and administration of the school prayer. Because the respondent is composed of surau receiving an excellent award from the Islamic Education Division, Ministry of Education.
