Automated Attendance System based on Facial Recognition

In educational institutions maintaining the attendance record carefully is an important concern. The traditional way to mark attendance, i.e. calling out the registration number of each student is time consuming, difficult and is quite inefficient. Therefore an efficient system to mark the attendance automatically is required. This paper on “Automated Attendance system using facial recognition”, presents a system that recognizes the student and marks the attendance without the faculty‟s involvement in the process. The system includes face identification, which would reduce the chances of proxy attendance. To design the system MATLAB seems to be a good choice because of the various toolboxes present in MATLAB. The algorithm used in the proposed system is Principal Component Analysis (PCA) based on Eigen face approach. The system involves comparison between the test and the training image and recording the attendance. The attendance is maintained in an excel sheet. This automates the entire process saving time and labour. This system can be used in areas where maintaining attendance record is essential.
