The Variety of Indonesian Human Characters in Seven Short Stories

Abstract

This research focuses on the author's narrative about the characteristics of the characters contained in the Indonesian short story. The authors interpret Indonesian people who live in Indonesian society. This research search for the activities of the figures as Indonesian people who are desired by the authors. The focus of this research is how the figure of Indonesian people is described in 8 short stories (selected Kompas 2016).The short story texts are analyzed by looking at the character's behavior. Based on the results of the analysis, the characters in the short story are typical of Indonesian people profession, such as the prayer workers, the "drum beater‖, the batik makers, the dry cleaner, the order killer.The author gives a new color to the character of the story so that it becomes new, as never happened before. The author tells through characters; activities and source of the incident of conditions experienced by the character. The characters in the story are specific Indonesian people; carry out activities that are believed to be true for no apparent reason,cover revenge with positive activities, seek out the ones he loves by sacrificing, combining activities between right and vanity, doing dirty activities without feeling guilty because it's a job. The story in a short story tells about the activities of Indonesian people with all their problems in a certain status. They solve their problems based on their own kindness.Their status are their life choice because they wanttheir life to be useful, because being chosen by someone else, because they want to forget, because they have to live it. Typical of Indonesia which generally life goes on as it is, sometimes without being planned.
