Increasing energy demand and thereby rising energy price, energy generation by conversion of fossil fuels and its effect on environment, unscheduled load shedding, and favorable government policies, are encouraging residential rooftop, grid connected, solar power generation. The efficiency and effectiveness of solar energy generation can be achieved through maximum utilization of generated power. Through proper energy management maximum utilization of solar energy can be achieved, minimizing energy bill. A scheme for achieving energy management of a grid tied PV system with backup battery supplying critical loads for residential application is discussed. The system is simulated in MATLAB. Implementing such a system to a residential load will reduce the energy bills considerably.
