In the context of the Western sanctions, the importance of international reserves is of particular research interest.In the paper, the functionality of the structural elements of the international reserves of the Russian Federation has been compared to the similar characteristics of reserves in foreign countries, and their sufficiency criteria have been defined. Besides, new criteria for threshold levels of the indicators on the Russian economic security have been offered.The obtained results can be used when developing a national adaptive strategy of the economic security in the area of international reserves management.The conclusions made by the authors indicate that the efficient organization of the international reserves management is an important condition for the foreign economic policy of the Russian Federation that will ensure the economic security.
