Abstract

Wastewater treatment is a global environmental problem. In Morocco, a lot of effort was made to ensure the treatment of wastewater before discharge. Built wetlands are alternative systems for treating wastewater. The objective of this article is to study the adaptation period (35 days) of a substitute plant; Vetiveria zizanioides, and to evaluate its potential for the treatment of waste water generated by faculty of sciences and techniques of mohammedia namely domestic and laboratory waters. A pilot experimental facility has been built. The planting density (V. zizanioides) on the surface of the filter bed is 9 plants / m2. The results show that at the end of the follow-up, the plants are in good health (absence of disease symptoms), and vertical flow constructed wetland is able of eliminating 80% of the BOD, 83% of the COD, 97% of the SS in domestic wastewater and 79% for BOD, 77% for COD and 99% for SS in laboratory wastewater.
