Abstract

Agarwood (Aquilaria spp.), a highly valuable and fragrant resin has become the most precious plant worldwide since the last 20 centuries for wide range of uses. The illegal hunting and over-harvesting of agarwood caused a number of these species to decrease in natural forests with a possibilty of extinction. The demand for agarwood that increases every year leads to the establishment of more agarwood plantations to serve as a sustainable source and to conserve this species in native forests specifically in Malaysia. This paper aimed to explore the future of agarwood in Malaysia based on the demand, potential market and export value for the further growth of agarwood manufacture and trade in the future at the local and international level. The government and the private sectors have worked together to prepare and organize various programs, seminars, workshops, supplying agarwood trees and advisory services. The commercial agarwood plantation and effective inoculation techniques are expected to help increase the production of gaharu to meet the demand in the future.
