AymenDesign a Compact Wide Bandwidth of a Printed Antenna using Defected Ground Structure

Abstract

This paper proposes the design of a wideband microstrip antenna that can operate in different multi-frequency bands. The antenna is of a simple structure, of a compact size, with good band characteristics, good return loss (RL), omnidirectional pattern and acceptable gain. Wideband antennas often fail to qualify for ultra-wideband(UWB) applications when not optimisedcorrectlyin both the frequency and time domains. The excitation of various modes causes variation in the position of the antenna radiation patterns and phase centreof the frequency. The design novelty is the impedance transformer of the antenna feed line which keeps theimpedance near to constant over the entire range of the wide-band frequency. It also contributes towards maintaining consistency in the radiation patterns over the frequency band.The novel compact UWB antenna was ultimately designed with optimised resonances within the 3.5145-10.944 GHz band which is the UWB frequency. The design contains an elliptical line feed monopole,and multiple rectangular shapedslots were added to the ground plane and patch for the frequency band. Accordingly, the antenna is suitable for commercial handheld devices, as its PCB circuit board area is only 22 × 22 mm2 when fabricated on the FR4 substrate material. The antenna simulation result of the RLwas -67.842 dB and the measurement waslower than -50 dB.Copyright © 2018 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l. - All rights reserved.
