Abstract

The purpose of the study is to discuss the socio-economic issues like hunger, poverty, casteism and other issues which make the people to struggle every day. The story also depicts the social obligations which tied up the individuals for their existence in the society to lead a contented life. The novel makes fun of the insensitive and ferocious action of the society and also shows the wonderful feelings through the characters. The scene of Bengal famine is horrifying and is elaborately portrayed. Bhabani Bhattacharya has also dealt with the theme individual freedom along with social freedom.The novel has succeeded in striking a magnificent balance between the soul stirring narration of hunger and poverty and awe inspiring depiction of perseverance and endurance through its central characters.
