Livestock Health Monitoring Using IoT Technology for Ethiopia

The emergence of IoT technology has improved consumer lifestyle through the use of smart devices and communication applications, especially in the healthcare and security industries. Many wearable IoT devices have been designed and developed to meet the consumer needs for a healthier lifestyle. Recent applications of IoT technology in the agriculture industry has shown a remarkable impact, and is carving out a growing market in tracking livestock that has changed the conventional ways of farming. The technology has been used to track livestock location and health condition by monitoring their body temperatures. This paper has proposed a livestock tracking and monitoring system using IoT technology for Ethiopian cattle farms. The proposed system is designed to focus on monitoring the calves’ health condition to ensure good quality of cattle production and reduce transmittable diseases from spreading among the livestock. Raspberry Pi and sensors have been used to gather and record the livestock data, whereas a mobile application has been developed to view, track and monitor the livestock location and health condition.
