Abstract

Most of high-rise construction projects nowadays are designed on 2D drawings and used traditional tools like Autodesk Autocad and Microsoft Excel to dissect and manage the construction volume. This traditional manual approach is highly error-prone, especially in case of changes to the design drawings, where re-input of data is required. This costs the quantity surveyor time and effort, let alone the risks of duplicated calculations and omissions. It is essential for such inconvenience to be solved out by building information modeling (BIM) in volume management. BIM is useful for its ability to automatically work out the construction volume and update design changes, hence cost-efficiency. This paper introduces the benefits and primary steps of Building Information Modelling (BIM) for volume management of high-rise building projects.
