This paper proposes an effective blind fragile watermarking scheme for image authentication and recovery using variable domain processing. In the proposed approach, an image is divided into non-overlapping blocks of size 2 × 2. A vector of size 1 × 12 is generated for each block which contains authentication bit and recovery bits for tamper detection and image reconstruction respectively. For each block, domain is selected dynamically to generate the recovery bits. If a block contains average information of the image then recovery bits are generated in spatial domain otherwise they are generated in frequency domain. Four symmetric keys are used to provide full proof security to vector of authentication and recovery bits. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of tamper detection as well as recovery of tampered blocks.
