Design and Analysis of WideBand Elliptic Patch Antenna

Abstract

A compact microstrip antenna for three bands is designed and its radiation properties analysis is presented. The proposed elliptical patch antenna provides coverage for L, UWB and up to X-band (2-12 GHz) in the microwave region. The reflection coefficient S11is -10dB for the range 2-12GHz. It is designed to be compact with 56.7x16x1.6mm3 dimensions. The radiating element is excited by microstrip feed along the major axis of the elliptical patch. Defected ground structure and the feed dimensions are used to enhance the band width up to 142% at high frequencies. Also a narrow slot is made in the middle of the radiating patch to enhance band width above frequency of 10 GHz. The elliptical patch dimensions are calculated with the lower frequency of the band. The proposed antenna is fabricated on FR4 substrate and its reflection coefficientis measured. The simulated and measured results are compared and are in agreement.
