Abstract

Greater changes in technological and economical fields generated the importance of smart city. The concept of smart city is integration of various devices connected to network with the help of information and communication technology (ICT) to improve city services and operations. The Internet of Things (IoT) enables remote monitoring and controlling of wired or wireless devices. IoT builds the actionable information based on the massive streams of information collected from the stationary or moving devices. The communication is core part in IoT based application. The smart city network is based on both wired and wireless communications. Hence the protocol needs to be smart enough to handle the dynamic data communication requirements such as text data, multimedia data, and file transfers among the heterogeneous network environment. To address various challenges in communication, we are proposing novel TCP variant called Smart-TCP which will efficiently tackle the communication requirements and handle the IoT in dynamic network. The Smart-TCP is based on the algorithm of detecting the type of losses (wireless or congestion) and mainly designed to handle the congestion efficiently in dynamic and heterogeneous networks. On the basis of Loss type, the retransmission and modified Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease (AIMD) phases are designed. The protocol is designed and evaluated experimentally with different TCP methods in terms of QoS parameters. Smart-TCP achieves the improved results under the different network conditions.
