The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a very important biomedical signal that evaluates the electrical activity of the heart.. To diagnose heart disorders, different features should be extracted from the ECG signal .This work presents a new method to improve ECG signal performance based on median filter and an automated R-peaks detection. The strength of the proposed work has been tested on MIT-BIH arrhythmia database for 48 records. More over the current work was verified experimentally using field programmable gate array (FPGA). The proposed technique showed better performance and faster detection compared to the recent techniques at the similar conditions. "A low detection error rate of 0.138%, positive productivity (P+) of 99.92%, sensitivity (Se) of 99.4% and Accuracy (Acc) (99.86%) has been achieved as average of all records. Experimentally the suggested work has been implemented by LabVIEW and FPGA Myrio1900 The same records were applied through one minute and the detection error was 1.4% which is better than the previous results which brought error around 1.9%.
