Abstract

In highway engineering, there are a number of activities which are mainly depending on the financial aspects. In the planning and designing of highways and structures there is increasing need for analysis to justify the effect of individual elements on economy of the project, particularly when various alternatives are available. This study includes the comparison of various design as well as economical aspects of Cantilever and Counterfort Retaining walls. The study observed that the cantilever retaining wall found economical for height only up to certain extent, however, counterfort retaining walls found economical for heights greater than 8 meters. Also, there is an attempt made in order to understand the effect of varying SBC on base to height ratio. It is seen that the SBC of base soil is inversely proportional to the base to height ratio.
