Deep learning, a recently emerged machine learning technique holds promises in achieving human-level feats in certain areas, most notably Deep Blue and AlphaGo that managed to defeat world-level human opponent in strategic games. This article begins with an introduction to the history and development of deep learning, a simple explanation of deep learning theory, why and how deep learning gain popularity recently. It then continues with a survey of deep learning researches and applications in multiple fields including healthcare, information engineering and sustainable development. Lastly, the paper concludes with a general recommendation for deep learning-related research directions.
