Revealing The Sociocultural Context Behind The News: A Critical Discourse Analysis On Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia’s Case On Republika Newspaper

Abstract

This paper is part of a larger critical discourse analysis research on fourteen news textsaboutthe Indonesian government’splan to disband Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, a transnational Islamic group, in 2017. The news was published byRepublika, a national Islamic newspaper, from May 9 to 19, 2017.Applying Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis method, this article aims to find out the sociocultural contexts, which consist of situational, institutional, and social aspects,that had happened and were going on when the newswas constructed by Republika’s journalists. The results obtained from the news texts analysis shows that the sociocultural context behind the construction of the news were(1) Indonesia's domestic situation related to somemassive demonstrations of Indonesian Muslims which raised the narratives of radicalism. (2) Republika’s concernon national interest and ideology,particularly onthe government's policyin relation to law enforcement. (3)Republika’s religious-political dimension as a moderate Islamic newspaper that was intented forall Islamic schools, organizations, and wide-ranging public.
