Application of PV Solar Farm as STATCOM for Increasing Grid Power Transmission Limits

D.M. Suriya Devi, Dr.M. Saravanan
Abstract

Photovoltaic (PV) Solar farm which generate power from few KW to several hundred MW are being installed in both transmission and distribution systems. It is utilized during day time only and inactive during the nights. The penetration level of Distributed Generation systems (DG) is growing with challenges such as ensuring voltage regulation, system stability and power quality issues. The above said problems are resolved by utilizing inverter in the Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Farm as STATCOM in the night time. A damping controller and Point of common coupling (PCC) voltage controller for the inverter in the PV solar farm is developed to make it to act as a STATCOM for improving transient stability and power transfer limits of grid and the results are verified using MATLAB-Simulink model.
