Optimal Volume Design of Small Scale PMSG Using Multi-population Particle Swarm Optimization

In this paper permanent magnet synchronous generator has been designed to meet the desired output power for direct driven small scale wind turbine. Design care has also been taken to minimize the overall volume of generator to reduce the cost. A minimization optimization with constraint has been proposed to model the problem. Particle swarm optimization has been considered as the method to estimate the optimal values of design parameters. The problems of reliability and getting stuck at local minima in particle swarm optimization have been solved by proposing the multistage multipopulation based variation in PSO. Proposed method has delivered the optimal design parameters which not only satisfy the power generation requirement at rated value but also delivered the cost effective generator.
